It is hard to believe that it is just two years ago that I first discovered the incredible K12 Online Conference. It didn’t seem possible that a conference so full of information was absolutely free. It still is and I am sitting here waiting for the first presentations of this year to be put online.
A week ago Kim Cofino presented the Pre-Conference Keynote address. Entitled Going Global: Culture Shock, Convergence and the Future of Education.
Using her understanding of living in another culture, Kim uses this as a way to look at Education in the 21st century world. It was a thought provoking presentation that has me looking at my life here in Beijing and how I approach my classroom.
One of the great things about the conference is that everything from the past three years is archived on the website. It is a good place to start. You will be amazed what you will learn. It was during the 2007 Conference that I first heard about Voice Thread. Now I am an active user of it in my classroom.
Last year I was introduced to Flip Cameras and while they are still not available in China where I live I am looking forward to the time when I will be able to actively use one or two in my classroom.
Many of the previous presenters are now part of Personal Learning Network. I am looking forward to meeting who will be sharing ideas this year.
The K12 Online Conference is an excellent example of how an asynchronous conference works and yet we are not left on our own as each presentation is linked to a blog or Ning or wiki. You will finish the conference with a strong list of new resources for you to peruse and possibly add to your classroom.
Join the conference – you won’t regret it.
